The King and the Nations

Session Overview

In this session, Cory Barnes helps us see that missions is not just a New Testament idea or a temporary assignment. It is woven into the entire story of Scripture. Drawing from Psalm 2, he shows how God’s mission begins with the reign of King Jesus and extends to every nation. The nations may rage and rebel, but God is not threatened. He has already installed His King, and the nations are Christ’s inheritance.

Rather than inviting people to consider a new king, our role in missions is to proclaim the truth that Jesus has been King all along. We are sent as ambassadors who were once rebels ourselves, inviting others to leave rebellion, take refuge in Christ, and experience the blessing of joyful submission to Him. Missions, whether in New Orleans or back home, is about faithfully calling people to bow the knee to King Jesus and live under His good rule.

Key Takeaways

  • Missions is rooted in the whole Bible, not only the Great Commission. From Genesis to Revelation and clearly in Psalm 2, God’s plan has always been global.
  • Evangelism is an invitation out of rebellion and into blessing. Submitting to King Jesus leads to refuge, joy, and life.
  • We are emissaries, not salespeople. Having once lived in rebellion ourselves, we now invite others to take refuge in the same King who saved us.
  • This mission shapes the rhythm of our entire lives. Missions is not only something we do on a trip but a calling that defines how we live every day.

Group Discussion

  • When you hear that Jesus is already King, how does that change the way you think about sharing your faith with others?
  • Where do you see people resisting Jesus’ authority most clearly in everyday life, including in your own heart?
  • What does living under the rule of King Jesus actually look like in your daily decisions, relationships, and habits?
  • Cory talks about inviting people out of rebellion and into refuge. What are some ways people around you are looking for refuge in things other than Christ?
